Often overlooked, annealing is one of the most critical steps in glass manufacturing. It ensures that every container we produce is free from hidden weaknesses, safe for daily use, and built to last.

The Hidden Risk: Internal Stress in Glass

When glass cools rapidly after molding, temperature differences between the surface and the core create internal tension. If left untreated, this “residual stress” can lead to:

  • Spontaneous cracking during handling, labeling, or filling

  • Breakage under thermal stress, such as during refrigeration or pasteurization

  • Reduced impact resistance, raising the risk of damage in transit

Precision Control: How Annealing Works

Our annealing process takes place in a specialized furnace called a lehr, where each bottle undergoes a carefully controlled thermal journey:

  1. Heating to the Annealing Point (500–550°C)
    Glass reaches a state where its internal structure becomes flexible, allowing locked-in stress to relax.

  2. Holding at Temperature
    Molecules slowly rearrange into a uniform, stable state—eliminating hidden tension.

  3. Gradual Cooling
    Bottles cool at a precise rate of 1–2°C per minute through the “strain point” (~450°C), preventing new stress from forming.
