Are you choosing the right neck for your glass jars? We break down the differences between the classic Continuous Thread and the high-speed Lug finish, helping B2B buyers select the best design for their specific packaging and machinery needs.
When browsing for wholesale Mason jars, the focus is often on the capacity or the shape. However, for professional fillers and distributors, the most critical specification is the Neck Finish. At XUZHOU TROY, we primarily manufacture two types of closures: the Continuous Thread (CT) and the Lug (Twist-Off) Finish.
While they may look similar from a distance, these two designs are engineered for entirely different worlds of packaging. Choosing the wrong one can lead to capping failures, leaks, and compatibility issues with third-party accessories.
The CT finish is characterized by a single, continuous protruding thread that wraps around the neck of the jar at least one full turn. This is the “true” Mason jar standard.
Best For: Home canning, dry storage, and the “gift” market.
The Advantage: It is designed for the 2-piece lid system (flat disc + screw band). Because the thread is continuous, it provides a high degree of “torque” or downward pressure, which is essential for creating a vacuum seal during a water bath or pressure canning process.
Accessory Compatibility: This is the most versatile finish. Almost all Mason jar accessories—pumps, straws, fermentation lids, and pour spouts—are designed exclusively for CT finishes (70mm or 86mm).
A Lug finish consists of several short, tapered ridges (lugs) spaced equally around the neck. Instead of multiple turns, the lid is secured with just a partial turn (usually 1/4 or 1/2 turn).
Best For: High-speed commercial filling (sauces, jams, honey, pickles).
The Advantage: Speed and efficiency. In an automated factory, a machine can apply a lug lid much faster than a screw-on CT lid. Furthermore, lug lids are usually “one-piece” metal caps with a built-in plastisol liner, making them more cost-effective for mass production.
The Aesthetic: Lug finish jars often have a sleeker, more “commercial” look. Many high-end food brands prefer this because it feels more like a professional retail product rather than a home-made craft.
| Feature | Continuous Thread (CT) | Lug (Twist-Off) |
| Capping Speed | Slower (Manual or slow machine) | Very Fast (Industrial capping) |
| Seal Type | Best for 2-piece vacuum canning | Best for “Hot Fill & Hold” |
| Consumer Ease | Requires more effort to open | Easier to “twist” open |
| Reusability | Excellent for home storage | Good, but lids are 1-piece |
| Accessory Market | Huge ecosystem | Very limited |
At XUZHOU TROY, we help our clients decide based on their business model:
If you are a wholesaler/distributor: We recommend the CT Finish. Your customers likely want the versatility of the Mason jar brand and the ability to use different types of lids and accessories.
If you are a food manufacturer: We recommend the Lug Finish. If you are filling 5,000 jars a day, the time and cost savings of a twist-off lid will significantly improve your production margins.
If you are a candle maker: The CT Finish is often preferred because it allows for a more “rustic” look with a metal screw-top lid.
A jar is only as functional as its closure. Whether you need the heavy-duty sealing power of a Continuous Thread or the industrial efficiency of a Lug finish, XUZHOU TROY has the molds and the expertise to deliver. We ensure that every neck finish is manufactured to strict GCMI (Glass Packaging Institute) standards, guaranteeing a perfect fit every time.
