Your initial assessment can reveal a lot about a manufacturer’s quality control.
Clarity and Color Consistency: High-quality soda-lime glass should be bright and clear, free from a hazy or greenish tint (which indicates impurities). For flint (clear) glass, exceptional transparency is key.
Surface Smoothness: Run your finger along the rim and sealing surface. It should be perfectly smooth, without any sharp edges, chips (called “checking”), or pits.
Structural Symmetry: The jar should stand upright without wobbling. The neck should be concentric, and the threads should be even and well-formed.
Bubbles or Stones (Inclusions): Small air bubbles or embedded refractory particles weaken the glass structure and are visual flaws.
Bird Swings: A thin strand of glass across the inside of the container, a clear sign of a manufacturing error.
Seam Blowouts: Imperfections along the mold seams, indicating issues in the forming process.
